Fiesta Bowl Preview- Stanford v.s Oklahoma State

by Brandon Pope

NFL scouts will be getting quite a show on January 2nd as top prospects from Stanford and Oklahoma State will put their talent on display in The Fiesta Bowl.

Glendale, Arizona will serve as the stage for two of the nation’s highest scoring offenses, both averaging more than 40 points a game. Both teams are 11-1 and could make a case to be playing for the national title.

For Stanford, this is their second consecutive BCS bowl appearance. Quarterback Andrew Luck will play his final game before becoming the likely number one overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. He’s got 35 touchdowns on the season. His counterpart is Oklahoma State’s Brandon Weeden, with 34 passes for scores. Cowboy’s star wide receiver Justin Blackmon has been on the receiving end of 15 of those touchdowns.

Both Luck and Weeden completed at least 70.0 percent of their passes. Weeden finished third nationally with 4,328 yards. Luck finished the season with 3,170 yards, but had 149 less attempts than Weeden.

Justin Blackmon, a first team all-american, finished the season ranked in the top 10 nationally in receptions, yards, and touchdowns. This is the second consecutive year he’s done that.

The key to this game will be how Oklahoma State responds after being slighted for a BCS National Championship game appearance. Will they be mentally ready to face a defense ranked 6th nationally with 38 sacks? Andrew Luck will be ready to capitalize on his last collegiate game. The Cowboys will have to meet Stanford score for score if they’re looking to prove they should’ve been playing for a national title.
