Behind Sean Marion’s 18 points and Dirk Nowitzki’s late 4th quarter jumpers, The Dallas Mavericks shut down The Oklahoma City Thunder’s late rally of desperation to take a 2-1 series lead in the Western Conference Finals.

The game was never that close. The Thunder missed their first 16 3-pointers in one of the worst shooting performances in conference finals history. Kevin Durant finished the night with 24 points and 12 rebounds, but was 0-8 from the arch. The Thunder as a team were 1-17 from distance.

Dirk Nowitzki had a rough night but came through in the clutch, finishing with 18 points on 7-21 shooting. The Mavericks were able to dominate the game despite Dirk’s slow start. Their largest lead in the game was 23.

I predicted 2 things yesterday…an OKC win and a good game from Westbrook. Only one happened.

Russel Westbrook got to play in the 4th quarter this time around, and he was outstanding. He led the team with 30 points. The only issue; turnovers. He had 7. It’s painful watching Westbrook play point guard, especially because of the lashing he gets from the media. Nonetheless, it’s clear he needs to play the two.

As for the Thunder, I thought they would come into this game ready to play. Based on what I heard from their press conferences and interviews, they seemed focused and determined to not let the Westbrook benching fiasco become a distraction. They swore up and down that it was no big deal. Kendrick Perkins looked like he wanted to hit somebody anytime it was mentioned (he always looks like that though). But it was clearly on their minds. OKC came out seeming flat and drained. They fell into an early hole that was too deep for them to climb out of.

This issue may have cost them the series.
