Maya Moore Joins Jordan Brand- A Win For Women’s Basketball

Yesterday, Former UCONN women’s basketball star Maya Moore signed a historic endorsement deal with Nike’s Jordan Brand, becoming the first female basketball signee on the brand’s roster, which currently includes Derek Jeter, Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul and Andre Johnson.

This year’s WNBA number one draft pick, Moore, 6”0, will be starting next season with the Minnesota Lynx. She is a former Naismith National Player Of The Year. The move represents what i feel is a gigantic leap for not only women’s basketball, but also women’s athletics.

I’d be the first to tell you that I, like many of my male counterparts, find women’s basketball quite boring. That’s because it is. It’s slower, the rules are different, and it just doesn’t have the excitement that the boy’s clubs do. That being said, these women work just as hard as their NBA counterparts, but don’t get nearly as much money, endorsements, or media attention. A modern day civil injustice.

This move, along with the growing popularity of players like Twitter darling Skylar Diggins of Notre Dame and Candace Parker of the WNBA’s LA Sparks, shows a growing awareness in the american consiousness of the female athlete in sports. And while some of this attention is coming because of their outer appearance (I’ll vouch for that on my behalf with Diggins), it’s still a step nonetheless.
